5 Ways To Boost Your Brain Power & DE Stress

This entry is almost ironic coming from me. I say that because I have become the queen of juggling balls in the air and building one long To Do List after the other. So this is one of those things where I am reminding myself of the good practices that help feed my soul and comfort my spirit and I am going to share them with you as I remind myself to do more of them.

#1 Gratitude First – Start your day with gratitude. Open your eyes, pick up a pen and a piece of paper and write down 5 things that you are grateful for right now. It could be some major goal that has been accomplished, or the simple blessing of being able to open your eyes to see another sunrise. More gratitude multiplies the goodness in your life.

#2 Real Rest – Sleep restores an overwhelmed mind, rebuilds and repairs neuron pathways and reduces stress. Learn de-stressing techniques that work for you like deep breathing or meditating. I have learned to turn use the “Do Not Disturb” tool on my phone to reduce interruptions, play relaxing music or sounds of nature when I lay down. I also use a sleep mask to provide additional protection from the interruption of outside light.

Check out Yellow Brick Cinema on YouTube for a variety of choices on soundtracks to fit your needs and personal tastes.

The sounds of rain are perfect for drifting off to sleep or melting into relaxation mode. I always found that I sleep well during rainy nights. And now I can replicate that with this recording anytime I need it.

# 3 Time Out – Give yourself regular time outs, where you unplug from the digital world, silence the noise and chaos and get quiet. Be still. Turn off the radio. Turn off the computer and cell phone. Turn off the television. Stop all of the outside input and get quiet. Get still. Listen for your own thoughts and feelings. And ask God for direction about your life. When you get quiet, He has the opportunity to speak to you and you can hear. But if you never get off of this merry-go-round of outside stimulation and other people’s thoughts, then how can you hear from Him?

#4 Healthy Habits – Take time to support the body and brain through proper diet and exercise, which increases blood flow to the brain, reduces stress and helps you focus. Get in at least 2 to 3 days a week of aerobic exercise (which could lower your risk of Alzheimer’s by as much as 60%). Be more mindful to feel the body well. Fuel it with a balanced diet, more fruits and vegetables and less processed foods. The key word is “mindful”. Many times being in a hurry and being pressed for time we reach for what is convenient and fast and that is rarely a way to build good eating habits (that is how I end up in the fast food drive through way too many times).

#5 New Territory / Lifelong Learning – Don’t stop expanding your knowledge. Clear more neural pathways by learning a new language, a new skill, an instrument or hobby. The challenge of the unknown strengthens brain resilience, stretches your capacity, enlarges your territory and widens your possibility thinking.

Live well and live long.

You Have Power! Are You Using It?

Good morning!  I just want to take a quick Take Five to share with you.

I was on a prayer call with one of my favorite ministers, Pastor Tyrone Ivy from Greater Hope Church in Phoenix.  Look them up on Facebook.  He does a prayer call every Thursday morning.

And today he put something on my mind because he was talking about the power and authority that we have as believers.  And my question for you today is:  Are you walking in that power?  Are you walking in that authority?  Or have you forgotten about it?  And let fear or circumstances or doubt distract you from it.

That’s Not Normal – So How Long Are You Going To Keep Doing It?

Seriously.  What do you do when something that is NOT normal has been going on so long that it becomes normal – even though its NOT?
I spend tons of time on computers, looking at monitors, sitting for long periods – and all of that can add up to muscle strain/soreness.

Having headaches two and three times a week was NOT normal.  Stocking up on Advil, Aleve, Tylenol or Excedrin like other people by milk and bread was NOT normal.
Thankfully somebody opened my eyes and showed me an alternative.  Now I am in the chiropractor’s office 3 or 4 times a month to get regular “tune-ups” for my body because now I know how to read some of the warning signs of what it feels like when I am out of line.  Going JUST ONCE was not enough.  I discovered that this challenge required an ONGOING MAINTENANCE plan to get it right.
A good maintenance plan strategy applies to more than just the body.  You have to pay attention and have an ONGOING MAINTENANCE plan for:
–       your HEALTH
–       your RELATIONSHIPS
–       your MINDSET
–       your SPIRITUAL LIFE
–       and with your MONEY
Do you have a strategy beyond HOPE and PRAYER surrounding your MONEY?  If not, let’s get real.  Let’s get free.  Click here
Sometimes things go on so long and you need someone to snap you back to truth.
Don’t begin to justify being ABNORMAL just because a lot of other people are doing it too – it still doesn’t make it normal, or God’s best for your life.
So here it is, my wake up call list for you to snap out of it:
–       Being in debt up to your eyeballs is NOT normal
–       Living from paycheck to paycheck is NOT normal
–       Using credit card to cover an emergency is NOT normal
–       Failing to plan and save for the day when you can retire is NOT normal
–       Ignoring your responsibility to legally plan for your loved ones is NOT normal
I write and teach and talk about these things because I HAVE lived them and understand the SILENT SHAME that can come with them.  I want to help you break through the paralyzing self-doubt that keeps you from moving forward.
No more.  Let’s get free.

Wishing, Hoping and Praying – IS NOT A Plan

Your plan for success needs to include more than just Hope and Prayer.

Don’t get me wrong.  I believe that your attitude is important and being hopeful, positive and having a vision for your future is key.  Scripture tells us to write the vision and make it plain so that it provides clear ongoing encouragement and direction as to what we are working towards.  We are also told to pray about everything and worry about nothing because it is wise to turn it all over to God.

However, my caution to you is that Hope and Prayer does not absolve us from being wise stewards and taking action on the things that are within our reach.  Jesus is not going to come down from heaven and balance our checkbooks or write our business plans.  He provides the inspiration but we must provide the perspiration.

Time to get to work!

It is impossible to map out a successful journey if you are not clear on your current location or your desired destination.

4 Ways to Start The New Year Off With A Bang!

Happy New Year!

If you are reading this, it means one thing for sure… You survived the holidays! Congratulations! You made it through the trips to the mall, coordinating all of the holiday events on your calendar, the long lines in the stores, the traffic on the streets and trying to find that perfect gift for someone special.

If you are like me, it is always fun to hang out with family and friends and loved ones around the holidays but it can also be exhausting trying to keep up with all of the details.

So say hello to 2017! And let’s start it off with a bang! Here are 4 ways to make immediate headway

  • Release the past! 2016 is over and there is nothing you can do to change what happened back then. What’s done is done. For better or worse the calendar page has turned. Be thankful for the lessons learned. Be thankful for the victories won. Be thankful for the important people in your life that you have been blessed to share time and space with.
  • Clear the clutter! The new year is a perfect time to move out the clutter. Whenever you move towards order, your mind, body and spirit all feel better. Think about how good you feel when you clean out your desk in box before going on vacation. Think about the relief you feel when you get your car detailed and they roll it up to you all shiny and clean with that fresh spray of air freshener. Take action right now at the top of the month and clear some space. Bag up some clothes that have been cluttering your closet and dresser drawers (give them to a loved one who can use, donate them to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army Store, or put them up for sell as a consignment shop – just get them out of your space and get free)
  • Write it down! This is a new year and it should start off with a new game plan of how you are going to move forward, improve and excel in your life. Write out the things that you want to be better this year than last year. Set targets for the major areas of your life (Health, Spiritual, Career, Financial and Relational). At every level and stage in our lives we can all be better. Find deliberate ways to stay connected to those you love and let them know you care.
  • Be Quiet! Build in quiet time in your daily routine so that you have a chance to step away from all of the constant daily noise and chaos of life. When you get quiet and still you will have the chance to remember what things are important to you. When you get quiet you can hear your own thoughts. When you get quiet you can connect with Spirit. When you get quiet you can recharge your batteries. Quiet time is precious time

May your new year be filled with blessings overflowing.

Laya Gavin

Just Give It 30 Days

I admit it.  I am a list maker.  I even admit that my lists have lists.  My morning using starts with my quiet time and before I hit the showers I am reviewing my list.  If I am standing in line at the dry cleaners too long, you may see me pull it up on my iPhone and see if there is anything that snuck on there that didn’t get done yet.  Because there is joy in checking things off the list!  Those are my daily victories, checking stuff off the list!  Like the feeling I used to get playing basketball when you put that jump shot up in the air and you see it go swoosh through the net!  Yeah Baby!

But I digress.  Back to the list.  Back to the 30 Days.  This is really about staying focused and staying grounded.  And this is especially about staying out of panic mode.

I make my lists, and action plans and line out when I want things to happen and when I feel it would be convenient for God to make a way and move things on my behalf.  As if all of the universe is really here at my beck and call and just around for my convenience.  (Okay, side note – I am really not that selfish but I confess that when I make plans, I am really thinking about how quickly this can happen so that I can move on to the next 50 things to be accomplished, conquered or handled on my lists).

So here is the deal.  I ran into a roadblock.  I was launching a business (because I am all about multiple income streams) and getting my real estate license with the state of Arizona and had to go through programs, classes, exams and applications.  It was months and months worth of time invested and thousands of dollars of my hard earned money (which I do not part with lightly – let’s be real).

So I got to the next step on my list and ran smack dab into a roadblock.  What I thought would just be the submission of an online document request turned into consultations with an attorney, multiple drafts of documents and gathering years of documented history and additional letters of endorsement from several sources.

Ouch!  None of that had been on my list. And I will be transparent again and say that this “church girl” was ticked off.  Yes I had prayed about it.  Yes I knew that God was in control of it all.  But I was hot about it.  As I sat there looking at the trail of emails back and forth on my computer screen listing out the hoops that I would have to jump through – I was so mad I just wanted to cry.  As tears began to sting the back of my eyes, my Logic Brain stepped up and said “What good is that going to do?  You won’t feel better and you won’t be one single step ahead in any of this mess.  So save the tears and do something.”

You can see that my Logic Brain is into tough love.  And it was right.  So I got moving.  And that is what you have to do when you feel stuck in a situation.  MOVE.  Take Action.  I called a close friend who listens to me, let’s me get my venting out of the way, and then helps me mentally clear the way for action.  And most importantly, agreed with me in prayer.

I went back through the red tape and paperwork and clarified what the bureaucrats and paper pushers were asking for.  I pulled together all of the available information I could and I hand delivered it to the administration office.  And as I sat in the quiet waiting room, I just prayed that this would be all that would be needed to get this thing done (and checked off my list).

The clerk called me up, began going through all of the submitted documentation and she said “Congratulations, we can go ahead and approve your paperwork and issue your license today!”  Praise the Lord!

While I am sitting there waiting for her to complete my package, the Commissioner of the State of Arizona Department of Real Estate walks into the office.  And while greeting the clerk and the other folks in the office, she finds out that I am being granted a license.  She comes to me and shakes my hand and congratulates me.  Before I am out that office that afternoon, I have met several very nice people and taken a photo with the Commissioner.  None of these things were on my list.  None of these things could have happened if I had not been detoured.  God knew all along.  I was the only one fighting the process.

Sometimes you have to surrender the list.  Sometimes you have to surrender your own timetable and just be ok with how and when God wants to work this thing out!  Because when you look back 30 days later at what you were frustrated about, you can see that God WORKED it out.  All you had to do was just WALK it out.

Just give your life a 30 day look back.  What stressed you out 30 days ago is part of your testimony today.  You are still here!  You are a fighter!  You are a survivor!  And God is using you to show others what the power of strong faith and trust in Him will do!  You are a walking testimony of His goodness!

You Can Either Pinch Yourself OR Kick Yourself

A Pinch or Kick?  Which one will it be?  There are certain moments that come up and you have to make the call.  Do you step up and move out of your comfort zone?  Or do you sit back and kick yourself after the moment has passed?

Well here I was sitting in a room learning from one of the top executives in the real estate industry, Mrs. Tami Bonnell.  When I say one of the top executives let me be clear, I don’t just mean one of the top female executives, I mean top executives across the board in all of North America.

She was named President and CEO of EXIT Realty Corp International in 2012.  She has over 30 years in the real estate industry and has been instrumental in building three major real estate brands.  She has been named among the Top 100 Women in Real Estate, the Natl Association of Women in Real Estate Business (NAWRB) honored her with their Roaring Twenty Award, and there have been many others.

She describes herself as a leader who takes on having the tough conversations because it makes everyone better.  She leads by example and she demonstrates her commitment to the success of those around her.

So I am sitting in the room, feverishly taking notes as she is training the EXIT Arizona Regional leadership team.  She shared the foundational concepts that lead to longevity and success in the real estate business no matter what cycle the markets are going through.  Here are a few of her leadership insights from that day and when you look at them you see that really apply to ANY business:

  • We all get busy with competing responsibilities (family, work, community, etc) so she plans her life in 6 week action plan segments.  On a Tues/Wed/Thur around the 15th of each month, she takes 4 hour block of time where she says “you have to take this time out to work ON your business instead of IN your business.”  She pulls all of her commitments together onto one calendar and integrates work, family and play all into one.
  • Build your “Dirty Dozen”.  The “Dirty Dozen” is a list of people in your industry or connected fields that you align yourself with to build trusted relationships so that you can keep each other abreast of developments and changes in the marketplace that could affect your business.  It is a give and take of knowledge.
  • Know your marketplace.  Know the street level numbers for your market or industry.  What is happening in sales and revenue for your competitors and how their are serving clients and how you compare.  Be prepared when you walk into a client meeting to educate them on the differences and the unique advantages that you bring to the table.
  • The Power of 120 Seconds.  Before you start running, take 120 seconds and visualize the entire day.  Think through how you want your meetings to go.  Think about how you want people to feel after our time together.  Visualize what you want to create.

So after the meeting, this amazing lady, business leader and industry executive took a few moments before catching her third flight in less than a week’s time and stopped and gave me her full attention.  It was at that moment that we talked about her habit of being a voracious reader.  Long story short, she left that meeting with a copy of my book in her hand and declared that would be reading material for her next flight.

This was an example of gracious leadership.  Tami Bonnell, CEO and President of EXIT Realty Corp. International is #1 in my book.

So I didn’t have to kick myself thinking of the missed opportunity of speaking one on one with this phenomenal lady.  I did walk away having to pinch myself, thinking “did that really just happen?” 🙂

Step out of your comfort zone, because you never know what amazing things could happen.
