Book interview with DJ host, Reggie Rogers from Power Jamz Live.  I was so very fortunate to get to spend some time with long time friend and radio host – we grew up together back in my old Oxnard, CA stomping grounds.

Listen in as Reggie and I get to talk about money challenges that are common to us all, but God is ever faithful.

There is no challenge that you are facing that is too hard for Him.

He is and always will be your heavenly provider.  Trust Him always.

Just Give It 30 Days

I admit it.  I am a list maker.  I even admit that my lists have lists.  My morning using starts with my quiet time and before I hit the showers I am reviewing my list.  If I am standing in line at the dry cleaners too long, you may see me pull it up on my iPhone and see if there is anything that snuck on there that didn’t get done yet.  Because there is joy in checking things off the list!  Those are my daily victories, checking stuff off the list!  Like the feeling I used to get playing basketball when you put that jump shot up in the air and you see it go swoosh through the net!  Yeah Baby!

But I digress.  Back to the list.  Back to the 30 Days.  This is really about staying focused and staying grounded.  And this is especially about staying out of panic mode.

I make my lists, and action plans and line out when I want things to happen and when I feel it would be convenient for God to make a way and move things on my behalf.  As if all of the universe is really here at my beck and call and just around for my convenience.  (Okay, side note – I am really not that selfish but I confess that when I make plans, I am really thinking about how quickly this can happen so that I can move on to the next 50 things to be accomplished, conquered or handled on my lists).

So here is the deal.  I ran into a roadblock.  I was launching a business (because I am all about multiple income streams) and getting my real estate license with the state of Arizona and had to go through programs, classes, exams and applications.  It was months and months worth of time invested and thousands of dollars of my hard earned money (which I do not part with lightly – let’s be real).

So I got to the next step on my list and ran smack dab into a roadblock.  What I thought would just be the submission of an online document request turned into consultations with an attorney, multiple drafts of documents and gathering years of documented history and additional letters of endorsement from several sources.

Ouch!  None of that had been on my list. And I will be transparent again and say that this “church girl” was ticked off.  Yes I had prayed about it.  Yes I knew that God was in control of it all.  But I was hot about it.  As I sat there looking at the trail of emails back and forth on my computer screen listing out the hoops that I would have to jump through – I was so mad I just wanted to cry.  As tears began to sting the back of my eyes, my Logic Brain stepped up and said “What good is that going to do?  You won’t feel better and you won’t be one single step ahead in any of this mess.  So save the tears and do something.”

You can see that my Logic Brain is into tough love.  And it was right.  So I got moving.  And that is what you have to do when you feel stuck in a situation.  MOVE.  Take Action.  I called a close friend who listens to me, let’s me get my venting out of the way, and then helps me mentally clear the way for action.  And most importantly, agreed with me in prayer.

I went back through the red tape and paperwork and clarified what the bureaucrats and paper pushers were asking for.  I pulled together all of the available information I could and I hand delivered it to the administration office.  And as I sat in the quiet waiting room, I just prayed that this would be all that would be needed to get this thing done (and checked off my list).

The clerk called me up, began going through all of the submitted documentation and she said “Congratulations, we can go ahead and approve your paperwork and issue your license today!”  Praise the Lord!

While I am sitting there waiting for her to complete my package, the Commissioner of the State of Arizona Department of Real Estate walks into the office.  And while greeting the clerk and the other folks in the office, she finds out that I am being granted a license.  She comes to me and shakes my hand and congratulates me.  Before I am out that office that afternoon, I have met several very nice people and taken a photo with the Commissioner.  None of these things were on my list.  None of these things could have happened if I had not been detoured.  God knew all along.  I was the only one fighting the process.

Sometimes you have to surrender the list.  Sometimes you have to surrender your own timetable and just be ok with how and when God wants to work this thing out!  Because when you look back 30 days later at what you were frustrated about, you can see that God WORKED it out.  All you had to do was just WALK it out.

Just give your life a 30 day look back.  What stressed you out 30 days ago is part of your testimony today.  You are still here!  You are a fighter!  You are a survivor!  And God is using you to show others what the power of strong faith and trust in Him will do!  You are a walking testimony of His goodness!

You Can Either Pinch Yourself OR Kick Yourself

A Pinch or Kick?  Which one will it be?  There are certain moments that come up and you have to make the call.  Do you step up and move out of your comfort zone?  Or do you sit back and kick yourself after the moment has passed?

Well here I was sitting in a room learning from one of the top executives in the real estate industry, Mrs. Tami Bonnell.  When I say one of the top executives let me be clear, I don’t just mean one of the top female executives, I mean top executives across the board in all of North America.

She was named President and CEO of EXIT Realty Corp International in 2012.  She has over 30 years in the real estate industry and has been instrumental in building three major real estate brands.  She has been named among the Top 100 Women in Real Estate, the Natl Association of Women in Real Estate Business (NAWRB) honored her with their Roaring Twenty Award, and there have been many others.

She describes herself as a leader who takes on having the tough conversations because it makes everyone better.  She leads by example and she demonstrates her commitment to the success of those around her.

So I am sitting in the room, feverishly taking notes as she is training the EXIT Arizona Regional leadership team.  She shared the foundational concepts that lead to longevity and success in the real estate business no matter what cycle the markets are going through.  Here are a few of her leadership insights from that day and when you look at them you see that really apply to ANY business:

  • We all get busy with competing responsibilities (family, work, community, etc) so she plans her life in 6 week action plan segments.  On a Tues/Wed/Thur around the 15th of each month, she takes 4 hour block of time where she says “you have to take this time out to work ON your business instead of IN your business.”  She pulls all of her commitments together onto one calendar and integrates work, family and play all into one.
  • Build your “Dirty Dozen”.  The “Dirty Dozen” is a list of people in your industry or connected fields that you align yourself with to build trusted relationships so that you can keep each other abreast of developments and changes in the marketplace that could affect your business.  It is a give and take of knowledge.
  • Know your marketplace.  Know the street level numbers for your market or industry.  What is happening in sales and revenue for your competitors and how their are serving clients and how you compare.  Be prepared when you walk into a client meeting to educate them on the differences and the unique advantages that you bring to the table.
  • The Power of 120 Seconds.  Before you start running, take 120 seconds and visualize the entire day.  Think through how you want your meetings to go.  Think about how you want people to feel after our time together.  Visualize what you want to create.

So after the meeting, this amazing lady, business leader and industry executive took a few moments before catching her third flight in less than a week’s time and stopped and gave me her full attention.  It was at that moment that we talked about her habit of being a voracious reader.  Long story short, she left that meeting with a copy of my book in her hand and declared that would be reading material for her next flight.

This was an example of gracious leadership.  Tami Bonnell, CEO and President of EXIT Realty Corp. International is #1 in my book.

So I didn’t have to kick myself thinking of the missed opportunity of speaking one on one with this phenomenal lady.  I did walk away having to pinch myself, thinking “did that really just happen?” 🙂

Step out of your comfort zone, because you never know what amazing things could happen.

7 Things You Should Know About Your Credit & Credit Score

This is definitely a matter of “what you DON’T know CAN hurt you.” Money matters and conversations about credit and debt can be embarrassing if you feel like you have made mistakes in the past and have not yet forgiven yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know.

I like the idea that when you know better, you can do better. So take this opportunity to get some good information and put it to use to improve yourself, and share it with someone you care about and perhaps help them avoid a pitfall too.
So here is a little real talk about credit, credit scores and where they come from.

1. Who is tracking your credit? There are 3 national credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax and TransUnion

2. Where does the information come from? They compile information received from banks and financial institutions, who send data about any debt or bill that you may have (car loans, credit cards, mortgages, medical bills, student loans, delinquent taxes, and even outstanding balances for that apartment you and your buddies from college were renting together and didn’t clear up). And every time you submit an application for new credit, whether approved or not, it is affects your credit score and is added to your file.
3. Who uses this information? You would be surprised. Utility companies, cell phone providers, landlords, insurance companies and even some potential employers are reviewing your credit history to determine your suitability and financial stability.

4. How can you find out what they are saying about you? Good question. Any time you apply for credit if you are declined, you will receive a letter in writing from the company notifying you what information was used to make their credit decision and how to request a copy of the credit reporting information obtained so that you can review it and dispute anything that is invalid. Also you have the right to get a FREE copy of your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus annually so that you can see the information and request any corrections, and make sure that no one else is using your identity illegally. Per the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) the ONLY authorized source for your free report is DONT BE FOOLED by copycat websites trying to get your personal data and your money.

5. What is a FICO score? FICO is an abbreviation used to describe the measurement of your credit score. The scoring ranges from about 301 to 850. The way your FICO score is calculated is to take your score from each of the 3 agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion) drop the highest score, drop the lowest score and select the one in the middle, and that is considered your FICO score. It is NOT an average of all 3.

6. What are 3 factors that contribute to my credit score? The length of time that you have had the lines of credit open. Your payment history. And the amount of the credit line used compared to the total amount available.

7. How much of my available credit should I use?  Ideally, NONE! It’s better to owe no one anything. But if you are using them, then the best way is to pay them in full monthly. The 2nd best use, if you are in a position where you cannot pay off in full, then use the Rule of ⅓. The Rule of ⅓ means that you only use ⅓ of your available line of credit. So if your limit on your card is $3000, do NOT carry a balance of more than ⅓ or $1000. This demonstrates to your creditors that you are not maxing out every penny of available credit and you are consistent on making your payments.

Keep It Going! God’s Word Is Doing A Work In You!

30 Day Word Challenge Is Still On!

Whether you started with us on July 1st or you just got this message today! The challenge is STILL ON!

THE WHO: This is for you if you want to focus on getting the MIND of CHRIST in YOU

THE HOW: Meditating on the word of God.  We will focus on what He has said – not what our broke-thinking friends are saying; not what the bad-news media are saying; not what the enemy would have you believe.

THE WHAT:  Look up the verses and write them out. Post them on your mirror. Write them in your smartphone or tablet. We will be speaking the word of God in 5 key areas over our lives and over our finances – first thing in the morning and last thing at night before we go to bed.

The Power to Get Wealth (Duet 8:18)
The Power of Reward of Work (Prov 28:19)
The Power to Prosper (3 John 1:2)
The Power of Sowing (2 Cor 9:6)
The Power of Reaping (Gal 6:7-9)

Wrapped in the word Did you get to implement the first twist?

As you read the scriptures, put your name into the verse. Read it as God is speaking to you. BECAUSE HIS WORD IS HIS VOICE SPEAKING TO YOU. Insert yourself into the Word. Let it wrap around you. Let it comfort you. So here is the example: “Laya, you shall remember the Lord your God, Laya because it is God that gives you, Laya the POWER TO GET WEALTH.”

Are you ready for the second twist?  TIME TO ELEVATE.

Start writing the word.  For one week take time to write out the scripture.  Each day, take one verse and write it out 5 times.  Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.  This word will become yours!

Remember to come back and share your testimonies of VICTORY, UNEXPECTED BLESSINGS AND the PEACE that comes with TRUSTING HIM and letting HIM BE YOUR PROVIDER. He said that “I AM THAT I AM”. Which translates to “He will be whatever we need Him to be”.  Sometimes the hardest part we have to deal with is US being still and getting out of His way. (Psalms 46:10).

Share with the rest of us any testimony and change of direction that your mindset, faith and your finances begin to take as you begin to incorporate more of God’s word into your situation.  Post, Comment or SHARE on FACEBOOK!

Share this challenge on your Facebook page, forward it to your friends and family – WE NEED MORE WORD!  WE NEED MORE VICTORY!

Juicy Twist to the 30 Day Word Challenge

I put it out there at the beginning of the month.  I wanted to see who would take it on and who could really stand on God’s word.  A 30 Day Word Challenge. Think about it – a simple 30 day focus of speaking God’s word and deliberately involving Him in our finances and our life purpose.  That’s powerful.

30 Days of focus.  30 Days of ignoring what the world says about money or more notably what the world says about a lack of money.  30 Days of focusing on God’s abundance and His promise to provide for His children!

We will be speaking the word of God in 5 key areas over our lives and over our finances – first thing in the morning and last thing at night before we go to bed.

The Power to Get Wealth (Duet 8:18)
The Power of Reward of Work (Prov 28:19)
The Power to Prosper (3 John 1:2)
The Power of Sowing (2 Cor 9:6)
The Power of Reaping (Gal 6:7-9)

And here’s a JUICY TWIST.  Step it up another level and insert your name into the scripture and read it like a personal conversation between you and your Heavenly Father.

Example “…God gives me (Laya) the power to create wealth!” Or “My beloved precious (Laya) I wish above all things Laya that you Laya prosper and be in good health Laya…” You see where I am going with this?! Speak the Word and stand on His promises!  He told us to prove Him (or try Him or test Him) and see that He will do just what He said He would do!

Share this challenge on your Facebook page, forward it to your friends and family!
